"El Meco" Coral Reef is one of the least visited snorkeling areas in Cancun. Shallow waters, tall coral structures and colorful species, make it an amazing spot for snorkeling
El Meco Coral Reef

One of the Shallowest Reefs in Cancun

El Meco is one of the last parts of the coral barrier which was discovered and used for tourism. This means, less traffic, less crowds and more underwater diversity. El Meco Coral Reef is Cancรบn’s shallowest reef, with sections barely 6-9 feet (2-3 meters) deep, making it excellent for amateurs and young children. It is also part of the coral reef barrier, the second largest in the world.

Colors and diversity at El Meco Coral Reef

This coral reef is the house of Sergeant majors, parrotfish, angelfish, and barracudas are among the many tropical fish and more. There are some parts of the reef that are close to ocean cenotes and some sections that collide with the MUSA making it an amazing stop for ocean lovers.

How to snorkel at El Meco

Some parts of El Meco are very close from the shore. This makes it easy for seasoned swimmers to get there. However, we don’t recommend it. Depending on the weather, some currents can be dangerous for people who don’t master the area. Also, the reef is protected and visitors must follow strict instructions. So avoid touching, standing, or disturbing the corals.

El Meco has calm seas and magnificent sand bottoms that reflect sunshine providing excellent vision. So, we recommend to join ourย 5-in-1 Snorkeling Tour to visit el Meco and four other amazing snorkeling locations.
