The story behind the shipwreck in Cancun

It’s interesting that there are more than one shipwrecks in Cancun where tourists go and swim. The most famous one is the USS Harlequin (AM-365), an American minesweeper used in World War II, intentionally sunk for scuba diving at a very significant depth. So you must be certified in order to visit this ship.

But we are not talking about this shipwreck, we are talking about the snorkeling shipwreck in Cancun.

The story behind this shipwreck is very interesting, as it sank in 2005 after hurricane Wilma and touched bottom approximately 3 km from “El Meco” coral reef and 1 km from “La Amada” marina. Its location is privileged, as it’s placed on white sand and only 4 meters deep, making it perfect for seasoned swimmers, but also for beginners. You can even see the ship’s mast above the surface.

A unique environment for a unique experience

The shipwreck in Cancun is a totally different snorkeling spot that is totally worthy of your time. As said before, its location close from the shore and shallow waters creates a unique atmosphere with turquoise and very clear water.

The best part is that nature has overtaken the ship, starting to grow small corals, but also fish schools and larger species that you can’t see at the coral reef are around.

How to snorkel in the shipwreck in Cancun

Although it is close from the shore it is not possible to swim to the shipwreck even if you are a seasoned swimmer. There are some currents on the way to the ship that make that swim a bit dangerous.

But small boats, catamarans can easily get to the point for the immersion.

We recommend visiting it with professional staff with top gear, as the shipwreck is rusty and sharp. So beginners without the supervision of a capable guide can be victim of the currents and get injured.
